On August 1st, Mind Storm Labs broke the fictional wall of its Alpha Omega prequel and redirected all the prequel sites to the actual product web page. Some fans felt anger, frustration, or concern about this. The reasons for that are complex.

Attempts to distance Alpha Omega from J.J. Abrams’ Cloverfield movie by stressing the different "dates of importance" led some to anticipate a spectacular event for August 1st. Others who participated in uncovering the prequel content had expected a chance to rescue the fictional lady in distress, Kellie Graham from Triton Enterprises, or at least learn her fate before the time was up. Finally, those who had associated Alpha Omega with the Cloverfield movie were expecting a chance to purchase t-shirts or similar merchandise as was possible with the Cloverfield Slusho store.

Unfortunately, none of this immediately came to pass. No major event took place on August 1st, and no email came from "Van Mantra." The main Alpha Omega web site was inaccessible for most users through August 1st and 2nd. (This was possibly due to unanticipated web traffic and/or DNS service attacks by disgruntled former fans.) An official community forum was constructed relatively early. But the Alpha Omega store wasn’t available until August 17th.

The Mind Storm Labs employees, taken by surprise with the size of their online audience, had already committed themselves to attending the Wizard World and GenCon Indy conventions during the first half of August. This must have seemed like a relatively short leave for them, but for the online fans it felt like centuries were passing. Somewhere among the sea of fans scratching their heads, a decision was made to temporarily carry the torch for the public fanbase.

[b:cbdc0]Nereid Communications - An overview[/b:cbdc0][/color:cbdc0]

Nereid Communicatins is a fictional company serving Triton Enterprises. Located in our present time, Nereid provides Triton employees with internet access and email services. Close relations between the two companies have allowed employees to cross over and may include a jointly held contract with the U.S. Department of Defense as well as shared corporate security arrangements. Our fictional lady in distress from the official prequel, Kellie Graham, is the daughter of Nereid founder Archibald Graham. More about Kellie and her fellow employees can be discovered by hacking into Nereid’s servers and following the email and instant message trail to Triton’s research labs.

It was originally unclear whether Nereid was a fan-based creation or an official continuation of the prequel saga. Either would have been a fair guess. Nereid’s creators designed the site as an "audition" and were privately seeking a go-ahead from Mind Storm Labs to continue where the prequel left off. To the creator’s chagrin, the term "gamejack" was often used to describe their site. This term usually describes the work of someone who seeks fortune or fame for subverting the intentions of the "official" content creators. The creators of Nereid claim to have offered supervised services to Mind Storm Labs for free and have refused thus far to identify themselves. Unfortunately, the effect of Mind Storm Labs’ apparent decision not to sanction Nercomm is that the site’s creators may never complete their work.

[b:cbdc0]A message from the creators of Nercomm[/b:cbdc0][/color:cbdc0]

On August 21st, the puppetmasters behind the Nercomm site decided to call it quits. They had broken the fictional wall of their project a few days earlier to offer explanations and request opinions on their next move. Mind Storm Labs then sent emails from Van Mantra and Triton Enterprise, which indicated that they’d continue the ARG in an official context. Though the overall fan reaction to Nercomm was good, it seemed untenable at best to continue at the same time as MSL.

- They are fortifying their network. We must use their own tool against them in order to ensure the truth is revealed.
- They seek only to create creatures against nature, against humanity.
- They seek to extend their grasp over all mankind. Once they control, they rule.
- (About Archibald Graham) He is the mighty sword that is swung by the masters, deluded to believe they are right.
- He gives up everything on the path to destruction.
- The companions of the great water god try to spread his lies. They must be stopped.
- Soon their door shall be opened, and the truth shall be revealed.

[b:cbdc0]The Nereid Communications Story - Megaspoilers Ahoy![/b:cbdc0][/color:cbdc0]

In mid-February 2007, Kellie Graham joins Triton Enterprises as per her father’s recommendation. She befriends fellow laboratory technican John Wainwright. By April, Kellie has grown to trust John enough to privately seek his help decrypting work documents. However, John had been contacted via email by a person identified only as "Truth" who is promoting underground rebellion. Truth sends John a document and code, asking for help, which John responds to affirmatively. Triton’s Corporate Security team finds and removes the attachment in order to analyze it. To Kellie’s distress, John mysteriously goes missing in early May.

By mid-May, Kellie has been promoted to work in Triton’s laboratory inner rings. She’s given additional security clearance and training, earning her rare kudos from her father Archibald. In their email exchange. Archibald says he’s been promoted himself to head a new research division at Triton. He also continues to act as Nereid’s founder and chief executive. He claims he doesn’t have time to meet Kellie even to celebrate their promotions.

Flash forward to the end of June. "Truth" contacts Kellie similar to the way he/she had contacted John. Again, Corporate Security finds and confiscates the email attachment after it has been read. Truth asks Kellie to "find the key" to "open the door" to Divinus. He tells her to investigate her father secretly to achieve this, as Archibald might sacrifice his daughter to preserve the project. Kellie uncovers an encryption block, but she leaves it in her email trash folder unsent.

By mid-July, outside rumors have prompted Corporate Security to remind Triton employees to disavow all knowledge of Van Mantra and the Divinus project. It’s in this climate that Archibald recommends Kellie for a side project, a press release for the web site in response to numerous email enquiries about Van Mantra and Ethan Haas. Cleo Williams, a lab administrator masquerading as a public relations expert, passes the instructions on to Kellie. Corporate Security is not pleased with Kellie’s work and warns her to run any future press releases past them for pre-approval.

Towards the end of July, Cleo Williams sends a report to Archibald Graham detailing the major research projects underway. (This document is not viewable due to a technical issue with the decryption program.) Cleo expresses concern about the "containment protocols" for the lab’s inner rings and offers to give Archibald a private tour. The warning isn’t heeded in time, however. Kellie reveals on July 25th that she’s been trapped on the D-ring research platform and is in danger. Archibald urges Kellie to complete her work and says he’s unable to assist her. Kellie offers little hope of completing work, explaining that Cleo has collapsed bloody to the floor.

Kellie’s last email on August 1st never makes it past her email drafts folder. She claims to be with six other people and multiple "pages" that she wants to scan in for all the world to see. Around this time, Todd Nazer from Nereid receives an email seemingly from Cleo Williams asking to have Kellie’s password reset. Todd fulfills the request, but the new password ever reaches Kellie or Cleo. Todd’s follow through suffers from distraction by his work buddy Allen Feinmen and Allen’s friend Katie. Todd’s performance issues are reflected in harsh words from Archibald about the corporate web site and a rebuke from Allen for leaving the email decryption program unfixed.

Startling news is released on August 14th that Kellie, Cleo, and John have died in an apparent car crash. The crash was said to have taken place the day before at the Bridge of the Gods, causing the victims’ car to fall into the nearby Columbia River. There were no witnesses, and a forensics report has not yet been released. A corporate memorial service is held that day. All Triton Enterprises and Nereid Communications employees are expected to attend.

It is at this point where the game ends to current knowledge. If there is a way to proceed further, it has not been discovered. It’s quite possible that the "decryption error" was simply the stopping point the Nereid site’s creators reached just before news of Mind Storm Labs’ disapproval reached them.

Alpha Omega engaged in a non-traditional launch strategy via several mysterious web sites. These were not fan sites, but most fan sites concern themselves mainly with these non-traditional sites rather than the Alpha Omega RPG itself.

These "unofficially official" web sites did not originally contain any links to the game or gaming company. So they were interpreted to be part of an elaborate Alternate Reality Game (ARG). This game was set in the present (the weeks prior to August 1st, 2007) and revolved around the doomsday prophecies of a long dead prophet/madman, Ethan Haas.

On August 1st, all the web sites began pointing to AlphaOmegaTheGame.com. However, the earlier contents remain online for review. Several related email addresses continue to send out prewritten automatic responses. These are best understood as a collective fictional prequel, since Alpha Omega itself takes place in the year 2280. It’s unclear at this time whether the ARG is over or whether other ARG-style content will be released before the game comes out this fall.

[b:3a3fd]Prequel Game Plot Summary - Warning - Game Spoilers![/b:3a3fd][/color:3a3fd]

Ethan Haas wrote a journal some 200 years before our time. This journal describes apocalyptic visions of fire and light, coming when "the return of the gods" brings war to the Earth. Haas complains that the visions intrude increasingly often, costing him sanity and sleep. About a week after the journal begins, Haas resigns himself to loneliness after his mental deterioration warrants ejection from the sanctuary of his local church.

Back in our time, a mysterious figure who calls himself Van Mantra proclaims that he sees signs indicating that Ethan Haas’ doomsday prophecies are coming true. He offers to assemble an advanced group of true believers to survive the predicted onslaught. Slow to trust, Van Mantra’s puzzling web site is designed to stymie the unenlightened. Van Mantra reveals his plans only to those who solve his puzzles, via low-quality videos where his face is partially hidden and his voice is distorted.

After Van Mantra’s web site is released, it comes to the attention of a shadowy group that call themselves The Mezin. The Mezin create an opposition site, claiming to be ancient witnesses of mankind’s development. Writing first in English and then in Sanskrit, they declare Haas to be a blasphemous lunatic and dare Van Mantra to reveal himself "for what he truly is." They argue that humanity’s destiny is to ascend to the stars, while Van Mantra would panic us and lead us astray.

By trying the email address and phone numbers associated with these two web sites, bystanders learn that the Mezin are chasing Van Mantra and have nearly succeeded in reaching him. The Mezin temporarily modify Van Mantra’s voice mail to send out a warning against him. Van Mantra, for his part, reports via email that he has escaped and relocated into deeper hiding. Though he fears any further direct contact, Van Mantra promises to smuggle pages from Ethan Haas’ journal to his followers.

By looking up information provided through the DNS registration of the web sites involved so far, internet detectives make a connection to two other entities: Triton Enterprises and Divinus. No further information can be found about Divinus. But Triton Enterprises has a web site under contruction. Apparently, Triton is a high tech company with a U.S. Department of Defense contract and the unusual slogan, "Building the Future One Vision at a Time."

Triton Enterprise’s barebones site nevertheless includes an email address for additional information. After numerous investigators send emails to the address, a press release is posted explaining that neither Van Mantra nor Ethan Haas are in the employee database, which goes back to the 1950s. Neither does Triton have a connection to the "proposed" Divinus "resort"... at least, not yet. Careful examination of the press release leads to the discovery of Haas’ journal pages.

Emails sent to Triton and its spokeswoman Kellie Graham continue to be answered politely. But after several days, a form message becomes the only response available from the main address. This prewritten email states that Triton’s Washington State facility has undergone a minor breach in security. The email apologizes to those with legitimate business, stating that Department of Defense procedure dictates that all visits and shipments be delayed until the situation is resolved.

Emails sent directly to Kellie Graham prompt her to tell a different story. Kellie calls out for help and warns that something has gone "terribly wrong" at Triton Enterprises’ research facility. She says she’s trapped with several other employees on a testing platform. She asks for God’s forgiveness for whatever part she may have played.

Not much later, Kellie Graham’s "last email" states that she has been sealed in from the outside and can’t be rescued in time. She writes that Triton has created things that are "not natural" and berates herself for failing to believe an unspecified someone. Triton Enterprises later confirms that they’ve closed their Washington research facility due to lingering security concerns. They plan to move their research operations to a new and undisclosed location. They make no mention of Kellie Graham and no longer respond to inquiries with anything other than their basic form mail.

A number of web sites were established or expanded in order to analyze the mysterious Alpha Omega prequel game. The official sites originally included no link to the game or gaming company. So part of the intrigue was about the fictional plotline, and part of it was about uncovering the game’s puppetmasters and their motivation for running the game.

Until August 1st, it was unclear what was and wasn’t part of the official game. Many sites were created that appeared to be part of the game but were not. These are usually referred to as "gamejacks." Often built for personal amusement or financial gain, such sites attempt to hijack the web traffic related to the official game and divert that traffic to a site that includes misinformation. The two most successful gamejacks introduced a fictional brother, Erik Haas, and attempted to connect the entire project to the Cthulhu monster/demigod from H.P. Lovecraft’s science fiction stories.

[b:aa2ba]About The False Cloverfield Movie Connection[/b:aa2ba][/color:aa2ba]

In addition to the gamejacks, there was also a lot of honest speculation that the Ethan Haas game was related to an untitled movie scheduled to debut on 1/18/2008 ([url:aa2ba]http://www.1-18-08.com/[/url:aa2ba]). That movie, known by either its debut date or the working title Cloverfield, was first advertised in front of this summer’s popular Transformers movie.

Some reasons for the false connection:
- The trailer’s display of destruction seemed appropriate for a doomsday scenario as prophesied by Ethan Haas.
- The movie trailer mysteriously omitted the movie title and destructive force, listing only the release date.
- The movie’s creator, JJ Abrams, used similar web puzzle tactics for fans of his "Lost" television show.
- One of the actresses in Cloverfield starred in a television show (The Class) along with a character named "Ethan Haas."
- The movie has a viral marketing campaign (see [url:aa2ba]http://www.slusho.jp/[/url:aa2ba] and [url:aa2ba]http://www.myspace.com/robbyhawkins[/url:aa2ba])

The last straw for many came when several videos related to Ethan Haas were yanked from YouTube at the same time as unauthorized copies of the 1-18-08 trailer. It seems this was an unintentional error made by Google and/or Paramount. A request to remove unauthorized trailer videos is common when posting an official version, which Paramount did ([url:aa2ba]http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/11808/[/url:aa2ba]). Fans suspecting a connection had likely labelled their Ethan Haas videos with the ‘cloverfield’ tag, leading to the videos’ removal following a basic YouTube text search for Cloverfield.

The connection persisted in some minds even after attempts were made to disabuse people of the notion. J.J. Abrams sent an email directly to a popular movie fan site ([url:aa2ba]http://www.aintitcool.com/node/33261[/url:aa2ba]) to clarify. The Alpha Omega people used their fictional characters to voice similar clarifications. But since both Mr. Abrams and the fictional characters in the Ethan Haas game were suspected of providing false information, many fans didn’t believe them.
