[u:99ce3]FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (F.A.Q.)[/u:99ce3][/color:99ce3]

[b:99ce3]Q. What is NeoPangea?[/b:99ce3][/color:99ce3]

A. NeoPangea is the role-playing group that is playing a virtual campaign over the Internet.

[b:99ce3]Q. Who is eligible to join?[/b:99ce3][/color:99ce3]

A. Anyone in the world who has the required tools and commitment to participate with other players using the English language.

[b:99ce3]Q. Where is NeoPangea’s campaign set?[/b:99ce3][/color:99ce3]

A. The campaign is set in 2280 on the continent of North America where hundreds of years have passed after Mother Nature’s Revenge eradicated most of the world’s population, reclaiming Gaia as her own and where alien-derived species live side by side, uneasily in some places, with humans.

[b:99ce3]Q. Is the campaign limited to non-Evolutionary species?[/b:99ce3][/color:99ce3]

A. No, however if you choose to play a Seraph or an Orphanum, you may want to play another character as the Orphanum and Seraph species aren’t introduced to the Alpha Omega universe until the year 2283 which will be the next campaign.

[b:99ce3]Q. Where does the inspiration for the story for NeoPangea come from?[/b:99ce3][/color:99ce3]

A. The campaign for NeoPangea was originally a novel that was a work-in-process that was started by Myridean about ten years ago. The story was about a young woman growing up on a commune hundreds of years after a vicious and virulent flu had infected the world, leaving only six percent of those who were able to develop the necessary antibodies to the phage to survive and later create a new utopian society. Without the necessary numbers of people to support the infrastructure of the 21st century, Gaia reclaims dominance of Earth’s landscapes through climate change and natural disasters that is called NeoPangea.

[b:99ce3]Q. What tools are required to play this virtual campaign?[/b:99ce3] [/color:99ce3]

A. What you will need to play is a copy of the Alpha Omega Core Rulebook[/url:99ce3] and a couple of sets of gaming dice ranging from d4s (four sided dice that look like little pyramids) to d20s (dice that look like icosahedrons). The manual is currently available for purchase online at the main site’s store while the dice you can get in any gaming store. You can also speak with your local gaming store retailer about ordering a manual through them. This book will contain most if not all the information you need to create your character and how to play the game.

As for the virtual campaign hosted at NeoPangea’s website, there’s a bit of a twist as the players are online, scattered all over the world in different time zones. To add to that challenge, they may not be situating their characters in the same city although it would make my job easier as GM to have them at least start on the same continent. Although I will probably try to hold real-time events over the Internet, most story development will be highly influenced by character development. Experience is gained through not just through combat situations but also through character’s personal interaction and involvement in the main story as well as the stories of others. How much interaction will be left to the players but through the use of in-character threads in a forum; character blogs like Regina[/url:99ce3]‘s; and/or IM interaction among players to the point where they could be using Live Action Role-play (LARP) using several multimedia programs and Alternate Reality Gaming (ARG) techniques, i.e. Skype, the player will be able to have lots of flexibility on how they want to role-play their character. In the end, the more you put into the game, the more you will be rewarded through Character Development Points (CDP) that can be spent on developing your character.

[b:99ce3]Q. What is the first campaign?[/b:99ce3][/color:99ce3]

A. The first campaign when NeoPangea launches will be "Milk Run", a short campaign of one or two sessions to determine how comfortable people are with the game and the technology to RP their characters in a virtual environment.

[b:99ce3]Q. How frequent will the RPG meet?[/b:99ce3][/color:99ce3]

A. The time and day is yet to be determined as it depends on the availability and level of commitment of both the GM and its players but probably after a series of polls as well as finding out how long a session’s duration should be. I would expect the whole group participating in a real time event at least once a month. For the rest of time however, independent interactions amongst the players are encouraged between meetings.

[b:99ce3]Q. How is the NeoPangea universe different from the Alpha Omega one?[/b:99ce3][/color:99ce3]

A. Although there will be items, terminology and creatures, etc., that might digress from the Alpha Omega universe but the world-at-large is based heavily on AO’s universe that can be found in the Alpha Omega Core Rulebook. What makes this upcoming campaign unique, as it will be told through the voice of the Storyteller who is the in-character avatar of the GM. She is located in a fertile region outside of the region AO calls the Great Wastes where she speaks a translated version of the language, Outsider, that is different from the global communication standard of the Net, English. Some words in Outsider may not have the same name in English or that they may in fact, be unique terms to the campaign.

[b:99ce3]Q. Who do I contact if I want to join or ask any questions not covered by the F.A.Q.?[/b:99ce3][/color:99ce3]

A. You can contact Myridean either through PMs on the AO community forums or via email at myridean @ neopangea dot net.

If it’s a moderated thread on a forum or IM conversation where a skill check is needed, yeah you’ll need your dice but if you can’t find dice, I am looking for virtual dice rollers. Virtual token modifiers can be used while posting or RPing but one of the guidelines I suggest if that the role is going to make an effect on someone else or in the development of the story that affects more than their own character that a GM be present. Although I hope to have at least one IC meeting once a month, I am committing myself to be available in the evenings if you need me for those inter-relationship, side story arcs. Skill checks as you know don’t always fall under combat. <!—s;)—>{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif<!—s;)—>

I’ve never RPed online before, but one of my friends used to do it.
I’m interested, but I have no idea what how it works.
Could you give me a quick rundown of how a face-to-face RPG translates into online interaction?

I’m in the Commons as we speak, meet me there and we’ll chat. Click on the banner to come to the site. It’s live now <!—s:)—>{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif<!—s:)—>

[b:6babd]Edit[/b:6babd]:
Hey Kargenetic,

Firstly, I apologize for not answering last night. Er, I was busy training some ninja wizards. Actually, I was curious if you were having trouble accessing the Commons last night because that would demonstrated a little of the face-to-face real time interaction in a textual format. It’s like an IRC chatroom that runs on Javascript. If you were having trouble accessing it, it may be that your Java needed to be updated.

Secondly, this is a great question because not only do I hope to capture the essence of real time interaction in gaming but also be able to take advantage of the technology of the internet and use other storytelling techniques such as ARG and LARP. Virtual gaming actually has been around a while on the internet. I found out that while some like to use a souped-up version of the chatroom we have that have more features and more control over customization to interract in textual roleplay, other applications called virtual gaming tabletop interfaces that simulate the game interaction with maps, diagrams, tokens, die rollers. On top of that, if the players are feeling more comfortable with other technology applications while playing in one of the monthly event, they’ll have a conference call on Skype or they log in together and talk over Ventrilo or Teamspeak where players can talk to each other in real time over the internet. Finally, with one to one interaction and confidence with getting to know the players better in the community, they can use if they like webcams during a session.

In the end, the player chooses how they want to portray the character in whatever medium they feel most comfortable with. There’s a thread right now on the forums that’s asking what application they would prefer to meet on for the monthly events. And we have a great section that offers links to find some of these applications that I spoke of in our Tools[/url:6babd] section of our website.

My apologies for the double-posting but if anyone was interested, I have a log of last night’s event[/url:8484e] on our forums now if you would like to read it. It’s broken up coarsely by subjects so if you don’t want to scroll through a very long text, you can pick and choose what you want to read about.

Myridean is currently working on her NeoPangea campaign and I’m sure will be posting something soon.  There are a couple of efforts in the works right now for developing online gaming, but they are still in development.  It will probably be September before anything is ready.
