Ok, if I’m reading this correctly we’ll need something like 36 or more dice to play this game.
I’m hoping I’m wrong in my assumption that this is for a single player. I mean, I can understand having that many dice for, say, four to six players, but for a single player to require 36 dice seems a bit excessive. I guess I just really hope that those 36 dice are for a group and not a single player. Can anyone shed some light on this or are we all in the same level of dark?
And yeah, I read the 6-6 System notes, perhaps I’m just not clicking on the concept XD
Yes you are reading that correctly. If you don’t want to share dice, you need a theoretical minimum of 36 dice. However, from what I can gather about the 6-6 system, the odds of actually needing that many are pretty slim unless you use that character for a LONG time. Think about it: how long will it take for a character to get to use 6 20’s? (Probably a while…but then again, we don’t really know…) Plus, I’m guessing that we will be using a mix of dice at any given time, and that our dice will grow individually, not as a group (as in, one d6 turns into a d8 while your others stay d6s).
Of course, I could be completely wrong about all of this <!—s:?—>{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_confused.gif<!—s:?—>
Yeah, it still seems kinda convoluted without the mechanics rules in front of me. I get that the dice "evolve" but whether we’ll need ALL of those dice at once or if we’ll just need certain dice at certain points of evolution is still kind of unclear.
The reason I ask is, while I have the necessary amount of dice (I have around 50 that I use, mostly D6 though), I know that dice aren’t exactly the cheapest things and if a new player wants to get into the game, the idea of buying 36 dice might be a bit "off putting".

Dice are actually quite cheap. You can get a packet of 36 dice for only $14 dollars. That isn’t much, when you think about it.
Heh "Only $14" isn’t a lot to regular Role Players. To people who’ve never played it, it could seem a bit excessive on "Just Dice". Though I have to agree that’s a pretty weak argument, and one that a couple beers can change fairly easily <!—s;)—>{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_wink.gif<!—s;)—>
As for it being straight combat, that makes things a bit better if that’s the case. Would hate to have to roll a handful of dice every time I want to use a rope or something mundane like that <!—s:D—>{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_biggrin.gif<!—s:D—>
I have a drawer full of d10s, thanks to the dice pools of White Wolf’s old World of Darkness (and especially [i:8ae5d]Mage: The Ascension[/i:8ae5d]). Still, some of my favourite RPGs these days are completely diceless, so the idea of using so many different types in a game isn’t exactly a selling point: I very much prefer "light" systems without excessive number-crunching.
I think this whole massive dice pool for the game might be my only point of contention (and an extremely minor one at that). I guess I’ll just have to wait and see the full mechanics before I jump to any solid conclusions, but as it sounds right now, this is gonna be a "Crown Royal Bag" sized game <!—s:D—>{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_biggrin.gif<!—s:D—>

[color=#BF80FF:1b28a]The question remains, "Does Crown Royal come with the bag anymore?". From what I recall, they had stopped doing that and if they had continued doing that, do I want to subject myself drinking Crown Royal to get a nice, purple felt bag. <!—s:P—>{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_razz.gif<!—s:P—> LOL But yeah, with all that dice (own mostly d10s myself from playing V:TM way back that I’ll have to go find), I still prefer the NWN’s dice bag item in their online game that you can roll electronically. *Myri goes off to think of making a dice bag from scratch or find a random number generator for her PALM at least* [/color:1b28a]
You can even get em personalized (at least in the US). Mine says "+5 Bag of Holding" in common geek practice XD Had a friend order it for me, paid him 5 bucks for the bag and let him keep the booze (since you can’t ship booze in the mail) <!—s:)—>{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif<!—s:)—> But you can also get them in gift cartons, it might just be a Manitoba thing though, what with the distillery located here.
At any rate… Gonna need to actually pick up a couple of "spare sets" for this game I think. Just to make sure everyone has dice <!—s:D—>{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_biggrin.gif<!—s:D—>
Well, while I have MORE than enough dice to easily meet the requirements, I just bought a "Bag-o-Dice" for twenty Dollars on [url:0a9cd]http://shop.rpg.net/[/url:0a9cd]
It is totally random, but expect a bunch of d6s and maybe even a few dice that have NOTHING to do with RPing. You might get only one d4 or d8 while I’m at it, but IMO for the price it is totally worth it for approx 150 dice.

I made myself a rather serviceable dice bag I hand sewed and riveted using the leg of an old pair of jeans. II am rather proud of that actually. <!—s:)—>{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_e_smile.gif<!—s:)—>

So you might need a theoretical maximum of 36 dice. I wonder how this would stack against the leading RPG, D&D. The current edition can require as many as 10D6, D4, and so on, off the top of my head. I’ve never seen anything call for more than 1 D20, but you can find yourself needing a lot of D8s.
Anyone stopped to question how this relates to other game systems? Whether this is a relatively unfair purchase, whether it’s a relatively fair one? What standards there are in terms of what’s "needed" to play? Is there anything prohibiting you from getting yourself a set of one of each and rerolling, like is often enough done by D&D players? Can you amass only the dice you need and move as you go?
The Core D&D (1st Ed) Box came with dice. It had two 1d4, 2 or 4d6 (can’t remember exactly), 1d8, 1d10, 1d12 and 1d20 (Still have a couple of these and they roll fantastically). That’s all you needed for D&D and hell, that still stands today (including any other D20 System game). 9 Dice at most. Palladium is the same really, just one extra d10 for percentiles. In Nomine uses mostly d6’s which are dirt cheap anyway. GURPS is also pretty straight forward. White Wolf is the only one I’ve seen, up until AO, that required a high amount of "non-standard" dice (that is not d6’s).
Games that use lots of d6’s can be excused. I mean, you can buy a 20 count case for about 2 dollars. However when you move out of standard dice, it gets more pricey which could be intimidating to new players. I know this happened with a few of my players when I tried to run WW, a few of em were very apprehensive about having to buy a lot of d10’s (mind you, we were still in high school and didn’t really have a steady source of income at the time). So yeah, extra dice can turn the frugal off, myself, I don’t mind buying dice (I love em lol) but I know a few of my fellow players might be a bit hesitant to drop down an extra 20 dollars on dice for a game they never heard of.

Besides, at least over here you can purchase ten-siders from just about any bookstore, just like six-siders.
